20170313_113726He waka eke noa – we are all in this together.  A whakataukī fitting for our Year 10 Te Reo Māori trip on the Aotearoa 1 Waka Haurua (double hulled canoe) around the Waitematā Harbour.  This amazing opportunity was provided by the National Maritime Museum to sail around the harbour on a waka haurua, a vessel similar to that on which our ancestors would have made the great trip from Polynesia to settle here in Aotearoa, New Zealand.  Students had the opportunity to learn how to hoist the sails, secure the lines, raise and lower the anchor and steer the boat.  We also heard stories from the crew about their voyages on waka haurua across the Pacific Ocean, and were even invited to join in the adventures if the girls were interested.  Students showed strong leadership skills and worked together as a team.  Overall, we had an amazing time, a once in a lifetime opportunity.  Mauriora!
